My name is Jake Shilan and I’m a Senior majoring in Biology and a minor in Religion. The Eckardt Scholars Program allowed me to explore courses outside of my major allowing me to truly find a discipline of interest. I have taken courses in the departments of Political Science, International Relations, Psychology, HMS and Religion. Even with all of these distinct courses, I was still able to graduate a semester early. The ability to gain such an eclectic education during my time here at Lehigh has truly shaped the student and person I have become. I hope to attend medical school after graduation.

Lehigh is an institution I will always look back on fondly, given the relationships and experiences I had with peers and professors. The Eckardt Scholars Program provided me with a cohort of thought-provoking and witty individuals from the very first day of Lehigh. I was also able to meet some of the older members in the program, who had loads of advice to give. Using the tips and tricks they gave me, I was able to secure a position in a research lab during the fall of my sophomore year. Performing independent research complemented my undergraduate education more than I could have ever expected.
